Feedback

I've just got feedback from OU. Made me feel better about my mark so not as disappointed as I was.

I was hoping for comments on each photograph but it was useful.

"I particularly liked image 2 (Dappled Sunshine) a very impressive and striking photo. I agree with all your comments about how it could be improved though. With a wider range of subject matters you would probably have achieved a higher grade as it makes it harder to demonstrate your abilities with just a few types of subject. I would like to have seen a night shot, portrait or action shot included. Apart from the two macro shots and 10, all pictures have been taken under broadly similar light. I like 7 (Echo Arena roof) too, a well observed shot of a familiar
enough urban scene. I was glad to see the statue close-up in 10 (We Will Remember), which works well"

T189 results

I got my result today.

I got 70% -

Visual awareness - achieved
Technical quality - achieved
Written component well achieved (which I thought was my weakest)

must admit I was disappointed but the more I thought about it I realised that it's not such a bad result after all. It's the first time I'd done any serious photography and at the end of the day it is a pass. I just need to practice, practice and more practice.

We get written feedback soon so that will be interesting to see where they feel I didn't do as well as I could have.

Week 10 - Final ECA

"The ECA (End of Course Assignment) consists of two parts and you should answer both parts. The ECA will be marked out of 100.
  • Part 1: Selecting and submitting a panel of 10 of your own photographs (worth 60 marks)
  • Part 2: Answering set questions on your photographs (worth 40 marks)."
You wouldn't think it would be so hard to choose your best 10 photographs would you, but I finally got there. The first 2 photos are one's I took before the course started.

1. Could you scratch just there!

2. Dappled Sunlight

I get the results on 17th September 2008.

Week 9

"Your assignment this week is to share a draft panel of 10 images and very importantly provide feedback on others’ panels. If you cooperate in your groups you will benefit. The more generous you are the more likely it is others will give you helpful feedback."
These are photos which where part of my draft panel. After feedback from other students I substituted a few of them.

Liver Birds on top of the Liver Building. I thought this was an okay photo but I didn't get very good feedback they thought it was my weakest image.

Week 8 - working with light

"In this session's photo assignment you are asked to take two pictures on one of the following themes:

(a) different lighting conditions
(b) two contrasting styles within a specific photographic subject."

The first photo was taken in 'Paddy's wigwam' or as it is more formally known 'Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King'.

The sunlight streams in through stained glass either side of this altar depending on the time of day, this was late afternoon.

This is part of the ceiling in 'Liverpool Anglican Cathedral'.

The 2 Cathedrals have very contrasting styles - one very modern and one traditional even though they where both built in the 20th century.

Week 7 - new style images

We weren't set a project for Week 6 because we had to get our CMA (Computer-marked assignment) in, but for week 7 we had to:

"I would like you to upload at least two of the images that you have created during the week in one of the in text activities:
  • composing images in the frame to alter their meaning
  • visual narrative
  • exploiting conventions"
'visual narrative' - Spend up to one hour taking three images which, when displayed consecutively, tell a story.

I took a series of photos on my way to the local park. I converted them to black and white in Photoshop Elements then colour popped the blue.

This is my attempt at food photography - strawberries artistically cut with a scoop of ice cream and swirls of cream. I just managed to get a decent photo before the ice cream melted too much and then of course I couldn't waste it could I so I ate it!!!

Week 5 Open Studio - Colour Safari

"Go out with your camera and look for colour. Take photos close to subjects, so that the colours fill the frame – it doesn’t matter if the viewer cannot immediately tell what the subject is. Consider the following guidelines:
Look for images composed of vivid colours (highly saturated) as well as more muted colours.
  • Look for complementary colours (those opposite each other on the colour wheel) and harmonious colour combinations.
  • Consider images that consist of single colours and multiple colours.
  • Think about balance, unity, dynamism and focus of attention when composing and editing your images."

Isn't this a glorious colour. I wasn't too sure what it was at first but I now know it's a Rhododendron. This was in bloom in my local park a few weeks ago.

I used some nylon thread to hang a CD up then swung it gently as I took a photo, this is what I came up with.

A pyramid of cotton reels.

I got the Template for this from a Photography magazine and used 3 macro photos of flowers in it. I love the reflection you get.
